Viral infections like the H1N1 ‘flu, bird ‘flu, West Nile virus, SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), Ebola, Entero-virus D68, and many others are increasingly in the news these days. These reports are starting to terrify people who, because of media fear-mongering, then desperately resort to potentially toxic drugs and unproven vaccines to protect themselves.
In fact, so panicky is the so-called “scientific” community and their feeble governments that potentially toxic, unproven drugs are being used on a mass scale as never before for the recent Ebola outbreak. When it comes to public safety in using new drugs, all caution seems to have been thrown out the window. So let’s, for the sake of our own sanity and common sense, dispense with the unnecessary hysteria and examine the facts.
Since there are as yet no acceptable cures for many viral diseases, least of all Ebola, most evidence-based scientists argue that the safest and most effective thing to do is to increase the power of our own immunity. The people who are most likely to be affected by viruses and other microbes are infants, children, and the elderly – populations with immature or weakened immune systems. Those following a poor diet, and those under large amounts of stress, are also more vulnerable to viral infection.
A virus is simply a fragment of DNA wrapped in a protective coat called a capsid. It is hundreds of times smaller than any bacteria and can only be seen by an electron microscope. Unlike bacteria, viruses are not really alive. When a virus comes into contact with a living cell, it attaches itself to the cell wall and injects its DNA into the cell. The DNA then uses materials inside the living cell to reproduce new virus particles, eventually causing the cell to die and burst. New viral particles then go on to other cells that in turn become factories for reproducing the virus.
A virus can lie dormant within any host or environment until the proper conditions for their activity are provided (e.g. weak immune system, drugs, stress, poor diet, toxic heavy metals like mercury, etc.)
Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies today focus their research efforts at developing more effective anti-viral drugs but, to date, have not found any magic bullets. Unfortunately, the profit motive is behind this. Scientists have started harnessing viruses to produce a wide variety of proteins for industrial and research purposes such as gene therapy. Viruses have been used to replace defective cellular genes and, through genetic engineering, the man-made viruses have been programmed to kill selected cell populations such as cancer cells.
Like bacteria and fungi, from which we obtain antibiotics, digestive enzymes, and cholesterol-lowering substances, viruses can be manipulated to work in our favour, protecting us from numerous diseases. Of course, much of this gene therapy is experimental at this time and not widely available to the public, except for scattered clinical trials at major research centers. The results of these trials have, for the most part, been disappointing.
Handwashing is the single most important, and most basic, prevention against the spread of infection. Plain soap and water should be sufficient to protect against the spread of both viruses and bacteria.
A weakened immune system can be caused by stress, nutritional deficiencies, or an excess of toxins in the body (e.g. lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, aluminum, barium, man-made chemicals, antibiotics, steroids, and other drugs). Immunity can also be weakened by hereditary conditions such as antibody deficiencies and a long list of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
Making simple changes to the diet can boost immunity against viruses. First, eliminate immune suppressors like tobacco, alcohol, sugar, sugar substitutes, refined carbohydrates, red meats, and processed foods. Eating foods laced with chemicals, or foods containing genetically modified (GMO) ingredients (wheat, corn, soy), or those deficient in vitamins and minerals (e.g. empty calorie junk foods), increases the likelihood of catching viruses of any kind.
Strong, healthy cells resist infections of all kinds, including viruses. Unsuspected food allergies can weaken this resistance and make it easier for a viral infection to spread. The immunosuppressive reaction of the body to these foods, usually multiple in number (3 – 20 indicating reactive or allergic foods are usually involved), can occur up to five days after consumption, and are thus not obviously apparent to the victim. The allergenic foods are commonly the favourite (craved) or frequently eaten foods, usually eaten in large amounts. The most common foods involved are sugar, gluten, milk, yeast, eggs, citrus, corn, and soy.
Diagnosis of food allergies can be made through an elimination diet or through blood tests known RAST tests. Delayed hypersensitivity food allergies do not usually show up on the standard skin or ‘scratch’ tests because only Type I (immediate hypersensitivity/IgE positive) allergies react on the skin.
The elimination of food allergens from the diet usually helps prevent recurrent viral infections, and can make a big difference to the overall health of the immune system.
When people consider using natural remedies to boost their immune system, what typically comes to mind first are antioxidant vitamins and minerals. These include vitamins A, C, D, E, astaxanthin, bioflavonoids, beta-carotene, N-A-C (N-Acetyl-Cysteine) glutathione, selenium, and zinc. Other popular choices are herbs such as echinacea, garlic, curcumin, medicinal mushrooms, oil of oregano, olive leaf extract, bee propolis, prebiotics, probiotics, and bovine colostrum.
Vitamin D, in particular, needs special consideration because it stimulates the body to manufacture a peptide (protein) known as cathelicidin. Cathelicidin is a natural antimicrobial which can attack all pathogens, including viruses. The higher the blood level of vitamin D, the higher the cathelicidin concentration and the more powerful its anti-viral effects.
An interesting phenomenon is the fact that the Ebola virus is inactivated by ultraviolet radiation, the very stimulus that causes the body to make more vitamin D.
There are now studies that show vitamin D supplementation to be an effective influenza prevention and treatment remedy. If you happen to have the ’flu, Dr. John Cannell of the Vitamin D Council recommends very high daily doses of vitamin D (50,000 IU) for several days to boost cathelicidin blood levels. In my medical practice, I’ve found this tactic to be a very powerful anti-viral force. Vitamin D in high doses has also been demonstrated to help heal the leaky gut, an anatomical defect that increases the infection rate from any microbe.
“When proper amounts are used, it will destroy all virus organisms. Don’t expect control of a virus with 100 to 400 mg of C. Some physicians would stand by and see their patient die rather than use ascorbic acid because, in their finite minds, it exists only as a vitamin [that cannot cure a sick patient].”– Dr. Frederick Klenner (1948)
Vitamin C is capable of inactivating (killing) any virus. There is NO virus that has ever been found to be resistant to vitamin C. You just have to get the dose high enough. Some viruses are weak and oral doses of 10,000 mg of ascorbic acid daily, or less, are effective. More powerful viruses might not respond until dosages of 100,000 mg daily are reached, and this is a dose that must be administered intravenously.
“The very first symptoms of Ebola are exactly the same as scurvy, which is caused by inadequate vitamin C. Though scurvy is seldom fatal as a primary condition, scurvy also represents only a partial deficiency of vitamin C; the body still has a LOT of vitamin C compared to zero, which Ebola causes. Absent ANY vitamin C, blood vessels become very weak and start to lose blood, and platelets become ineffective and unable to trigger clots. So death by Ebola is caused by massive internal bleeding and loss of blood, which can be stopped simply by taking enormous doses of vitamin C until the immune system succeeds in killing off the virus.” – Dr. Thomas Levy (August, 2014)
Aside from its ability to directly kill viruses on contact, vitamin C boosts the immune system by stimulating interferon and antibody production. The net effect is shock therapy and death for Ebola. The benefits of vitamin C for all viral infections have long been known through the work of Dr. Frederick Klenner (1948). Unfortunately, much of his work has been ignored, vilified, and criticized by the Big Pharma world, as if that’s a big surprise.
Proven natural anti-viral remedies include oil of oregano, mild silver protein (e.g. Argentyn-23), thymus gland extracts, and medical ozone or hydrogen peroxide (intravenous, rectal insufflations, or as an ozone steam bath). There are also numerous antiviral herbal remedies (see list below).
Different remedies work for different people. It’s all a matter of what suits your biochemistry best as well as trial and error with different remedies or combinations.
ANDROGRAPHIS – In Scandinavia, this herb is used to fight the common cold, ‘flu, and upper respiratory infections. It works by boosting the immune system, helping the body to battle infections, and prevent them from reoccurring. Andrographis tincture can be taken at the first sign of cold or flu symptoms, as a natural treatment.
ECHINACEA (Echinacea pupurea) – The anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties of this herb are best used in combination with other anti-viral herbs
LOMATIUM (Lomatium dissectum; Indian carrot) – This herbal medicine contains anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory factors
MYRRH GUM – A gum resin with anti-microbial, anti-fungal, astringent and expectorant properties, this substance stimulates white blood cell production
REISHI – This medicinal mushroom contains polysaccharides with anti-tumour and immune-stimulating properties for the spleen and bone marrow
ST. JOHN’S WORT – This North American herb contains anti-viral and anti-inflammatory compounds (a focus of much AIDS research)
THUJA – has anti-viral, anti-fungal and expectorant properties effective in the treatment of warts, fungal infections, and bronchitis
WILD INDIGO – contains alkaloids and oleo-resins which are anti-viral and anti-microbial
