Dear Dr Rona,
Is there a naturopathic treatment for chlamydia pneumoniae? I have been using Dr. Sherry Rogers’ protocol in the Cholesterol Hoax, which involves azithromycin for a five day period, twice a month for a six month period. It does not seem to be working for me, so I was wondering if you could suggest something else.
Thanks in advance,
Susan

Six months of any antibiotic is likely to lead to resistance, gut flora imbalances (dysbiosis) and other potential infections, namely fungal infections like candidiasis. Other prescription antibiotics that might work against chlamydia pneumoniae when aziththromycin stops working are tetracycline, doxycyline and erythromycin. Even naturopathic remedies have a certain finite period of time during which they are effective.
To give your immune system the best chance to fight this or any other infection, get food allergy testing done. If you are allergic to either gluten (grains) or dairy, avoiding these foods is likely to help you fight chlamydia pneumoniae much better. Of course, eliminating sugar, alcohol and refined foods is important too.
According to Dr. Cass Ingram’s book, The Cure is in the Cupboard, chlamydia is sensitive to Mediterranean oil of oregano (wild mountain oregano). Try the C-93 New Roots brand – 5 drops under the tongue twice daily. With that, use some friendly bacterial flora (acidophilus), about 1 tsp or 3 capsules daily. There are many good brands to choose from here. Other natural remedies to consider are colloidal silver, olive leaf extract, garlic, propolis, echinacea, goldenseal and berberine. See a natural health care practitioner to get a personalized regimen.
