HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE for Boosting Fertility and Conception

Four and a half months following their initial homeopathic treatments, Leah called me to announce that she was pregnant

Infertility was a long and difficult road for Leah and Ben, a couple in their early 30s who had been trying to get pregnant for over three years. After the first year of no success they decided to consult their family doctor and went through extensive physical exams and testing. The doctor concluded: “You’re both fine. I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t be able to conceive!”

The doctor then suggested that perhaps they were too stressed and needed to take a vacation and relax in order to boost their fertility.

During the second year, Leah and Ben decided to clean up their diets. They eliminated simple sugars, limited alcohol consumption to special occasions, and ate lots of fresh vegetables, fruits, and lean meats. Their fun and relaxation included weekly date nights and two vacations in the tropics. While monitoring Leah’s ovulation each month, they even tried “old wives tales of timing and positions” with no success, according to Ben.

The third year was most stressful for the couple and included hormonal treatment for Leah to increase ovulation, followed by two in vitro fertilizations (IVF).

About Infertility

According to Health Canada there is no single definition of the term infertility. “It typically refers to a lack of conception after a reasonable period of sexual intercourse without conception (one year for women who are under 35 years, 6 months for women over 35 years).”

Infertility in Women Can be Caused by:

  • hormonal imbalance
  • tobacco and alcohol use
  • endometriosis
  • uterine fibroids or polyps
  • prolonged use of oral contraceptives
  • history of sexually transmitted infections
  • blocked fallopian tubes
  • history of chronic disease, heavy medication use

Infertility in Men Can be Caused by:

  • hormonal imbalance
  • poor sperm quality
  • low sperm count
  • history of sexually transmitted infections
  • history of chronic disease, heavy medication use
  • The relationship between emotional stress and infertility is widely accepted, but not addressed in conventional treatment.

Research tells us that stress elevates levels of stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, which can inhibit the release of the body’s main hormone, Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH). GnRH is released by the hypothalamus (a region of the forebrain which coordinates both the autonomic nervous system and the activity of the pituitary, controlling body temperature, thirst, hunger, sex drive, sleep cycles and emotional activity) and is responsible for the release of sex hormones. Thus, a decrease in the production of GnRH may suppress ovulation in women, reduce sperm count in men, and lower libido in both sexes.

About Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that stimulates the body’s natural mechanism to heal itself. Unlike other treatments, homeopathy is very successful in addressing the emotional stresses which may be contributing to infertility.

Homeopathy treats the whole person, taking into consideration all physical symptoms combined with all emotional stresses experienced.

Benefits Homeopathic Treatment Can Provide:

  • regulates hormones, menstrual cycle, and ovulation
  • improves sperm count and motility
  • increases libido
  • dissolves cysts and fibroids
  • reduces emotional stresses (such as anger, depression, and anxiety, along with stresses associated with the inability to conceive)

Each person seeking homeopathic treatment for infertility is likely to receive a different homeopathic remedy. The remedy is matched to the unique symptoms and feelings of each individual, rather than the diagnostic label of their condition.

Leah and Ben’s Story Continues

When I first met Leah, her frustration level was high and she told me that homeopathy was her last hope for becoming pregnant.

I proceeded, as usual, to ask questions about her medical history, sleep habits, appetite, digestion, menstrual cycles, skin issues, joints, and so on. After discussing her physical nature we proceeded to her emotions. Leah’s strong sense of duty, fear of losing control, anxiety about health, combined with her painful menstrual cycles and mood swings, fluid retention, and unique digestive troubles led me to prescribe the remedy Kali carbonicum.

Within two weeks of taking this remedy, Leah reported feeling a lot calmer in general, sleeping deeper, and having more energy. She was excited to have her husband Ben experience the benefits of homeopathy and made an appointment for him. I did the initial two-hour consultation with Ben, similar to Leah’s, and gathered all relevant information. After analyzing his data, I prescribed the remedy Cuprum metallicum. This is a remedy suitable for people who are disciplined, have a strong sense of right and wrong, and a predisposition to muscle cramps.

When Leah came back for her first follow-up visit six weeks after her initial consultation, she told me that her latest period was far less painful and she wasn’t as moody or miserable around her cycle. She also said, “There is something very strange happening at home. Ben and I don’t argue like we used to!” I explained that this was a side effect of the homeopathic constitutional remedies they were both using. When a person feels happy, energetic and more productive with their respective remedy, the likelihood of arguments and discord also diminishes.

Four and a half months following their initial homeopathic treatments, Leah called me to announce that she was pregnant. Nine months later, Leah delivered a healthy baby boy.

While homeopathy can be useful in resolving known causes of infertility, such as hormonal imbalance, low sperm count, or endometriosis, it is especially useful in unknown causes of fertility. Homeopathy treats the whole individual as one unit, taking into account physical symptoms and feelings. This results in a more balanced organism, increased vitality, positive outlook on life, and a greater chance of natural pregnancy.
