Travel Well: The Must-Have Homeopathic Travel Kit
Julie Daniluk, R.H.N. October 1, 2024Let’s be real; travelling is a double-edged sword. On one side, you’ve got sunsets, new foods, and exciting adventures. On the other? Jet lag can make you feel like a zombie, questionable beverages or meals can throw you off, and the potential of dreaded cold or ‘flu symptoms seem to know exactly when you’re going on vacation.
But fear not! Your friendly homeopathic travel kit is here to save the day – like your personal health crusader, but in tiny, pellet-sized doses. I first started using homeopathy in 1999 while attending herbalism school. I find it effective and easy to pack on a trip.
A Quick Intro to Homeopathy
Homeopathy has been around for over 200 years, invented by a German physician named Samuel Hahnemann in the late 18th century. The basic idea is “like cures like.” In other words, if a substance causes symptoms in large doses, it can resolve those symptoms when given in tiny, diluted amounts. Think of it as fighting fire with fire – with way less risk of burning the house down.
Hahnemann also came up with the concept of potentization – basically, diluting and vigorously shaking the remedy (a process called succussion) to enhance its healing powers. In homeopathy, it’s not just about what’s in the remedy but the energy it carries. It’s like turning up the volume on your favourite song until you really feel it – except with less noise and more healing.
How I Saved Alan’s Stomach (and our trip)
During our last trip to France, my husband Alan ordered a different menu item than me, and I did not sample his meal. The next morning, he came down with terrible food poisoning.
Thankfully, I had my homeopathic travel kit with me. Using a few doses of a homeopathic remedy along with a quick combo of probiotic yogurt and mandarin skin zest, he became symptom-free in 24 hours. This is incredible because he had been down for the count – nausea, riding the porcelain pony, and all the fun that comes with food poisoning. I pulled out my vial of Arsenicum Album (which, fun fact, I had received as a gift after touring the Boiron factory in France…VIP perks), and voila! The problem was solved.
Boiron is the largest manufacturer of homeopathic medicines in the world, known for its commitment to making fresh mother tinctures, and then potentizing them with state-of-the-art technology. After touring the factory, I can confirm the remedies are meticulously prepared, ensuring quality and effectiveness.
The dose I had on hand was 15 C, which is recommended to be taken every 30 minutes when things are rough. In Alan’s case, within 12 hours he was already perking up and even started eyeing the cheese shops (in what town?) (with a bit of caution this time). Crisis averted, and we were back to enjoying our food-filled adventures in no time.
Homeopathy 101
Homeopathy is a type of Traditional Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) used all over the world. In fact, millions of people rely on it with 32 million in the UK, 193 million in the USA, and a whopping 1.2 billion users in India and 10.6 million users in Canada.
To put it simply, homeopathy involves remedies that are prepared by diluting the original substance (could be from a plant, mineral, animal or other natural source) and succussing it to enhance its effects.

If someone undergoes an emergency procedure while travelling, Ledum might aid in reducing bruising and speeding up recovery.
A Few Tips for Using Homeopathy Like a Pro
As a nutritionist and avid traveller, I noticed that I have the best results when I do these 3 things:
- Start Early: At the first sign of symptoms, get your remedy out—don’t wait until you’re curled up wishing you had.
- Stick to the Dosing: More pellets don’t equal more power. Follow the recommended dose and let homeopathy work.
- Avoid Strong Flavours: Mint, coffee, and other strong flavors can interfere with remedies. Skip them 15 minutes before and after dosing (yes, even if you really want that minty gum).
Note: there are instances where a 200C potency might be more appropriate in homeopathy, especially for acute or intense conditions, as well as for emotional and psychological states that need a deeper or more systemic response. It’s advisable to consult a qualified homeopath before using higher potencies.
The Bottom Line: My Pyramid of Healing
Travel can be unpredictable, but with a well-stocked homeopathic kit you’re ready for anything. Whether it’s jet lag, food poisoning, or muscle soreness from those epic hikes, homeopathy offers a natural, gentle way to stay healthy and enjoy your adventures.
In my own approach, I like to think of health as a pyramid – my Pyramid of Healing if you will. At the base is anti-inflammatory nutrition. This is the foundation; what you eat daily as your body’s fuel, and I always prioritize nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory foods to keep my system strong and balanced.
Next, in the middle of the pyramid, come herbs. Think of them as your everyday allies. Use turmeric for inflammation, ginger for digestion, or echinacea when your immune system needs a boost. They provide a powerful, natural way to support the body and bridge the gap between nutrition and homeopathic remedies.
And finally, at the top of the pyramid is homeopathy. This is where the precision of tiny doses comes into play, addressing those acute, sudden issues that pop up, like Alan’s food poisoning incident or jet lag. Homeopathy, for me, is the cherry on top that completes the holistic picture, giving me the confidence to travel, explore, and live fully without worrying about unexpected setbacks.
So, next time you’re packing for a trip, remember to build your pyramid! Start with solid nutrition, look for local herbs, and finish with some trusted homeopathic remedies. It’s a travel toolkit that keeps you feeling your best, no matter where you go. Bon voyage, and may your adventures be as smooth as your favourite remedy!
