Woodford Files: On Tools for Healthy Travel; Recipes to Curb Cravings; Fertility-Boosting Nutrients, and more

The wicked weather of late has caused many of us northerners to wish we could crawl into a warm cave and hide until spring. In other words, do like the bears.

Fortunately, I was able to escape with my family for a few weeks to the sunny south. Equipped with a kit of first-aid remedies including hydrogen peroxide for disinfecting scrapes, cuts, and even the airplane washroom (1), along with activated charcoal for food poisoning, and Neem insect repellent for warding off local bugs (2), we were well prepared. And if I had to do it again I would add a traveller’s probiotic that doesn’t need refrigeration, a zinc-based sunblock for extended exposure to the sun (I normally don’t wear any sunscreen), and a homeopathic remedy for nausea (to help survive choppy boat rides). Live and learn!

Meantime, back in the great white north, this month we offer “High Octane Winter Fuel” by Nutritionist Julie Daniluk who shares recipes for sugar-free foods that keep blood sugar stable while satisfying our cravings for comfort. From Sweet Potato Casserole to Crush Your Cravings Pesto to Pecan Stuffing, these are the dishes that winter bliss is made of.

And if you and your sweetie plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day, or you’re struggling with infertility or low libido, don’t miss Zoltan Rona’s story on “21 Nutrients to Boost Your Libido, Fertility, and Testosterone”. Here we find chocolate for boosting dopamine levels, ginger for improving blood flow, and Maca for increasing testosterone and progesterone. It's a recipe for turning up the heat on those long winter nights!

We also have a great story by Herbalist Klaus Ferlow on the miraculous benefits of elderberry, along with a comprehensive review of comfrey medicine by Herbalist Michael Vertolli. Add to that an interesting new perspective by Karen Stephenson on detoxing your wardrobe, along with our growing Natural Health Services Directory, and you've got lots to read this month.
