In Memoriam: Dr. Jozef Krop (1944 - 2025)

Jozef Krop and his daughter Joanna Krop
“Healing is sacred, and every patient is sacred.” — Dr. Jozef Krop
It is with profound love and gratitude that I remember my father, Dr. Jozef Krop — a pioneering physician, devoted healer, and tireless advocate for environmental and orthomolecular medicine in Canada. To the wider world, he was a visionary whose work shaped the landscape of complementary healthcare. To me, he was my father, my mentor and coworker, and a model of integrity and lifelong learning.
From Poland to Canada: A Journey of Purpose
Born in Poland to a hardworking farming family, Jozef grew up respecting the land that feeds and provides. At age 14 he was cared for at a healing sanatorium for tuberculosis and that inspired him to become a doctor.
At age 27 he immigrated to Canada seeking freedom and opportunity, carrying with him a determination to serve others and think independently. Those experiences shaped his worldview: he believed deeply that healing was sacred, that each patient was sacred. For him, environmental health was more than a scientific concept. Protecting the environment was protecting life itself. Caring for people and caring for the planet were inseparable.
A Pioneer in Environmental and Orthomolecular Medicine
Upon arriving in Canada my father was serendipitously placed as an intern with the father of orthomolecular psychiatry, Dr. Abram Hoffer. That was his first introduction to medicine beyond the allopathic model.
When Dr. Krop was introduced to environmental medicine in the early 1980’s, it caused him to turn his practice upside down and totally change his approach to medicine. He sought to treat root causes rather than merely manage symptoms, helping thousands of patients with chronic and complex illnesses, including multiple chemical sensitivities, Lyme disease, and environmentally linked conditions.
He was among the earliest physicians in Canada to recognize the profound impact of toxins on human health, advocating for patient choice and integrative care long before these ideas gained wider acceptance. He was, in many ways, a “hippie in a suit” regarding how he was committed to exploring new and revolutionary frontiers in health and healing. Yet he carried himself with the discipline and precision of a medical professional.
In 2010, Dr. Krop was again breaking new ground, expanding his interests into energy medicine. That year I left my teaching job to join my father to open a BioResonance clinic together. I started with him because the technology piqued my interest as an energy healer, and I stayed because the approach healed me and I wanted to learn. It was my father who knew what to look for. He said, “your symptoms aren’t just stress.”
Had I not listened to his advice, I would have ended up in a health crisis. He knew how to look at the whole person – not just their health but their story – and deconstruct why a person got sick, and construct a path to return to health. When most people are thinking of retiring after decades of work, he was still practising into his 80th year. His curiosity never waned and his desire to make a meaningful difference remained as strong as ever.
Regulatory Challenges
While today it is commonplace to see signs urging people to be ‘scent-free’ in public spaces, in 1993 Dr. Krop was brought up on charges of not upholding the standard of practice of medicine by the regulatory body for doctors in Ontario for suggesting exactly those kinds of common-sense health interventions.
The patients who came to see him were the ones who medicine forgot, ignored or gaslit. He knew their issues were not in their head but a result of root causes that most doctors then ignored: stealth infections, chemical sensitivity, hormonal imbalances. For 15 years he fought those regulatory challenges in a huge legal battle. He was always grateful for the support that Vitality magazine readers gave him during those years.
Dr. Krop didn’t stage such a battle for personal gain or recognition, but because he believed patients deserved access to alternative therapies that worked, and that it should be done through the medical system. This unwavering conviction earned him deep respect and love. I remember countless moments — in airports, gift shops, or over the phone — when strangers would recognize my surname and say, “Your father is my hero.” Those words, repeated again and again, reflected the profound impact he had on people’s lives.
Legacy of Courage, Vision, and Compassion
In recognition of his pioneering vision, Dr. Krop received the Groundbreaker Award from the Dr. Rogers Prize for Alternative Health, honoring those who open new paths in healthcare. Yet his greatest legacy was larger than awards or accolades. I believe his soul came into this world to expand the archetype of what it means to be a healer and a doctor — to remind us that health is sacred, that life itself is sacred, and that courage, integrity, and compassion are at the heart of healing.
He had a healer’s heart, a sharp and inquisitive mind, a rock-solid conviction, a feisty spirit, and a humanitarian soul. His spirit lives on — in the patients he healed, the practitioners he inspired, the clinic we built together, and in all of us who were privileged to witness his vision, courage, and love.

Dr Krop saved my young daughters life. He went to battle for her health when mainstream medicine had given up. My adult daughter is thriving and living a good life thanks to him and we will always be grateful. A true warrior for good health. Thank you Dr.Krop!
Dr Krop was a saviour for me, first with multiple chemical sensitivities and then nine years later with LYME. His determined approach to understand the root cause was matched with his exceptional ability to select the appropriate medicines and treatments. I am still grateful for Dr. Krop’s brilliance and humble service to wellness for everyone…every day. Namaste.
He was a REAL warrior! He was put through a huge amount of stress but always fought back. Having the opportunity to work at one of the largest health food stores in Hamilton years ago I heard a lot of good things about him through my customers. After having to go through stressors alone I developed multiple chemical sensitivities and became quite ill. Dr. Krop became my doctor/naturopath through the late 90's healing me and anchoring me. Through the early and mid 2000's after I moved away from the Hamilton area I went back to sell him natural products. He was an amazing teacher too and took the time to inform me about so many things in the industry. RIP, Dr. Krop. 🙏 ❤️
Dr. Krop saved my son. He had severe environmental sensitivities. It was Dr. Krop who helped him thrive. My son is now turning 39. He earned a degree in Environmental Science and is thriving.
Dr. Krop is a true hero. Compassionate, caring and a trail blazer.
My deepest sympathies for your loss. His memory will not be forgotten.
oh my heart hurts to read this.
I had the honor of Dr. Krop come stay with me as I taught HIM a modality as he was trying to navigate other ways to help people after he gave back his medical license. He and his wife became a part of my heart...
His legacy continues through all of us!
It cannot be that Dr. Krop has left us. He was larger than life, very exciting to know. I attended some of his battles with the Medical Industrial Complex. He helped me when I was sick. He was game to attend my husband's events. The frightening thing is that he bolstered up Functional Medicine and there seems to be no one to step into his shoes. I hope that people search out his style and demand it for us.
I am sad to hear the news of Dr. Krop's passing. He was a brilliant and innovative doctor who really cared about his patients. He and his daughter Joanna helped so many overcome chronic conditions when no one else could. And he helped move the acceptance of the impact of environmental factors on our health. Dr. Krop, you will be remembered as a real hero.
He was the light and leading star in the medical darkness that tried to stop him. His work will live on in those select few enlightened doctors who saw his vision and continue to be an advocate of full healing complementary medicine . I was proud to call him one of my mentors, my colleague and my friend. God has welcomed a true warrior and he will be missed immensely by ALL of us. Sending love and hugs, Katrina
Dr. Krop was the wonderful gentleman who diagnosed my daughter's health issues when she was in Grade 4. The main stream doctor wanted to prescribe Tylenol with Codeine to relieve her headaches. I refused of course and set out to find a Doctor who would go to the root cause and had been trained in various diagnostic tests. With food testing, consultations and his diet with supporting supplements ,my daughter's health turned around.
She is now a Naturopathic Doctor - Emily Lipinski who is helping many in healing naturally especially in Thyroid issues. I know he influenced her choice of career.
He will be missed by many. All the best to his family. He was a giant in his career. We are so thankful .
