Woodford Files: Whole Life Expo 2015 – We’re Turning Black Friday into a Green Weekend

How about that magazine cover! This month we have our very own glamour girl on Vitality’s cover, none other than Julie Daniluk herself – famous nutritionist and author of the bestselling Meals That Heal Inflammation (winner of the 2012 Gourmand World Cookbook Award).

Her article in this issue, ‘Balance Your Hormones with Cures from the Kitchen,’ explains the direct connection between unhappy hormones and inflammation, which in turn is at the core of many common diseases. Of special interest are the kitchen cures that she brings to the table, everything from probiotics to B vitamins to plant lignans and more. This nutritional advice is a valuable counterpoint to the bad news that we’re usually bombarded with. For example, on October 26, the World Health Organization reported that eating processed meat is directly connected to elevated cancer risk, and unprocessed red meat may also be carcinogenic. (The WHO’s cancer research unit now classifies processed meat as “carcinogenic to humans” based on evidence from hundreds of studies, and linked it specifically to colon cancer.)

Fortunately, with nutritional leadership from people like Julie Daniluk, Marni Wasserman, and Meghan Telpner, all featured in Vitality over the past few months, it is easy to switch over to meatless meals and still enjoy the comfort of hearty textures and yummy flavours.

Also in this issue, we offer a provocative look at a normally taboo subject: herpes. Written by medical science researcher and great-grandmother Helke Ferrie, this ‘Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Herpes’ feature delves into the world of the ‘biofilm,’ a type of armour that allows bacteria and viruses to hide from attack by the body’s immune system. Helke’s article shares an intriguing tool kit of natural substances that can effectively penetrate the armour so that aggressive viruses like herpes and lyme disease can be brought under control. The article is both scary and fascinating at the same time, especially considering that over 90% of the human population now carries some strain of herpes virus, including the one that leads to painful shingles outbreaks.

By the way, I must apologize for our late release of the November issue. For the past several weeks we have been completely bogged down with putting together not only the current issue of Vitality, but also the annual Whole Life Expo Showguide. Whew! It was quite a job to stuff 80+ speakers and 275 exhibitors into the 16-page Showguide tucked in the centre of this magazine, but ultimately worth the effort. Inside you will find a smorgasbord of lectures, demos, and exhibits, which is what makes this event the largest showcase of natural health and green living in Canada. Vitality will be at the Expo with a booth, as will Dr. Rona and all the top nutrition superstars. Grab a friend and head on down to take advantage of the two-for-one Exhibit Hall Pass this year.
