On Cool Spring Tonics—and Hot Spring Shows
The energy of spring is gaining momentum now as we fully emerge from the darkness of a long winter. Astrologer Kaypacha (http://bit.ly/YUHLrM) says this is the time to open our hearts, embrace change, and tap into our deepest primal instincts. He recommends re-evaluating priorities and reconnecting with our soul’s purpose to guide us in new directions going forward. To celebrate spring, we bring you a magical cover illustration entitled Presence of Gaia by visionary artist Josephine Wall. It captures the lush wildness of the earth goddess as she awakens and calls forth the creatures of her kingdom to play.
This month, Pat Crocker celebrates the season with herbal tonics reminiscent of those used by early European settlers to cleanse and rejuvenate themselves after a winter of heavy comfort foods. From dandelion and ginseng to parsley, the ingredients are readily available to experiment with in different delicious combinations, which are sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter, but always good medicine.
In keeping with the exuberant energy of spring, there are many great events happening around Ontario, and you’ll find them in our Calendar of Events which is bursting at the seams. One in particular is especially noteworthy:
The Green Living Show, coming up on April 12, 13, 14, is being sponsored this year by Whole Life Expo and Vitality Magazine. We feel that embracing the concept of green living is a natural evolution for the wholistic health community, because personal health and environmental health are so intimately connected. For example, Helke Ferrie’s talk at the Green Living Show, entitled “Creating a Healthy Home,” will discuss everything from fluoridated water to toxic cleaning products to garden pesticides and how they impact our health, increasing the risks of asthma, cancer, and other diseases. She will offer intelligent solutions for detoxifying heavy metals, carcinogens, and drug residues in order to improve our odds of survival in a toxic world.
Helke’s talk is a good reminder that our health is impacted not only by how well we nourish ourselves, but also by how mindful we are in all areas of our lives. The way I see it, if just one person switches to biodegradable laundry detergent, or aluminum-free deodorant, or non-toxic deck stain (see page 92) then the world will be a better place for all of us.
