The basic elements of a home spa may include: facial steam, facial mask, hair treatment, aromatic bath, body oil, and foot scrub. The atmosphere should be suffused with luxurious flowers, candles and beautiful music. Using these basics, you can then customize your home spa by selecting essential oils, colours, flowers and herbs to suit your individual needs and desires. Let’s start with some basic recipes.

Facial Steam:

2 quarts spring water in a non-aluminum pot
1 ounce herbs or herbal blend
2 or 3 drops essential oil

Place herbs in spring water and bring to a low boil. Let simmer for 5-10 minutes. Remove pot from heat. Add essential oils. Lean over the pot (make sure your hair is pulled back) and cover your head with the towel, creating a tent to hold in the steam. Breathe in the healing vapours for 10 minutes, turning head every few seconds to allow steam to coat your face evenly.

Facial Mask

1/2 cup china clay
3-4 drops essential oil
enough liquid (tea, spring water, aloe juice or egg white) to form a paste

Mix ingredients together and spread over warm, clean, slightly damp face. Allow to set for at least 15 minutes. Remove with warm water.

Hot Oil Hair and Scalp Treatment

10 drops nutmeg oil
10 drops basil oil
10 drops rosemary oil
1 oz. walnut oil

First, make the oil blend and nest the container (glass or durable plastic) in a bowl of very hot water. Place the mixture where you can reach it from the shower. Let it heat. Make sure you have a plastic bag within reaching distance, too.Rub oil into your scalp and roots with your fingers. Massage thoroughly. Wrap the plastic bag over your hair and take your bath. Remove the plastic cap and shampoo and rinse hair thoroughly.

Sugarfoot Scrub

1 Tbsp white cane sugar
1 tsp vegetable glycerin (or aloe or cucumber gel)
2 drop peppermint oil
2 drops spearmint oil
1 drop lemon or lemongrass oil

Combine ingredients in a cup. Apply a teaspoon to each foot. Scrub your clean, damp feet for a minute. Lay back with your feet elevated and let the scrub set for 5-10 minutes.

HEALING WATERS SPA — FOR BALANCE

Humans have been drawn to water since primordial times. Some anthropologists even argue that humans were fully or partially aquatic at one time in ancient history. Indeed, immersing oneself in the womb-like waters of the ocean, where the rhythm of the waves reminds us of the heartbeat of our mother, has an immediate centering and balancing effect on the body and soul. This spa moisturizes and tranquilizes, preparing you for autumn’s weather changes, or for any time of upheaval and change.

Atmosphere: Light many blue and green candles. Put on some soothing music. (I like to listen to the songs of humpback whales during the Healing Waters Spa.) Burn sandalwood or amber incense.

Step 1: Steam face with rosemary herbs and 1 drop rosemary oil.

Step 2: Apply Facial Mask using above recipe for clay mask, adding one teaspoon powdered kelp, 1 drop of rosemary oil and 1 drop of lavender oil.

Step 3: Take a quick shower to remove surface dirt. Apply rosemary hot oil treatment to wet hair and wrap in plastic bag.

Step 4: Step into a warm Kelp Bath. Massage skin with the kelp and salt filled washcloth.

Step 5: Soak, enjoy and meditate. Envision equilibrium, balance, tranquility. Imagine you are a mermaid, floating effortlessly in the water. Feel the healing, womb-like qualities of the seaweed and salt-water. Sip ginger and lemongrass tea for warmth and serenity.

Step 6: Unwrap the plastic bag from your head. Dunk your head under the water and remove the facial mask and some of the hot oil treatment. Feel the flow of your hair in the water. You are a beautiful mermaid!

Step 7: Take a shower and gently wash the hot oil from your hair.

Step 8: Dry yourself gently. Sit on a towel on the edge of the tub and apply the sugarfoot scrub to feet as described above. Rinse.

Step 9: Slather kelp gel all over your body including the feet, and put on cotton socks to hold in all that beautiful moisture. Relax!

Kelp Bath

Place two tablespoons powdered kelp (purchase powdered kelp at any health food store) and one tablespoon sea salt in a washcloth. Tie the cloth closed with a string or rubber band. Place the cloth in the hot bath with you and swish it around. A slightly gelatinous substance will begin to flow out. This is the beautiful, moisturizing magic stuff.

Kelp Gel Body Serum

1 tablespoon kelp powder
1 cup spring or aloe vera water
1 cup aloe vera gel
20 drops frankincense oil
9 drops palmarosa oil
9 drops seaweed essential oil (available at some body shops — if you can’t find it, just leave it out)

Mix the kelp with the water. Let sit for an hour. Strain through cheesecloth. You should end up with a very slightly cloudy, loose gel. Add to the aloe vera gel and blend in the essential oils. The resulting gel with have a beautiful, light consistency and will blend in with your skin quickly. This gel will keep for approximately two weeks in the refrigerator.

Perfumes are the food of the goddess! Since time immemorial, people have been using aromatics to attract the attention of deities who will fulfill their hearts’ desires. Scents have also been long used by women (and men) to enhance magnetism, sensuality and sexuality. Let’s put it all together and dedicate this spa to Aphrodite, the goddess of love! It is a giving, nurturing, non-judgmental, healing love. You please the goddess by giving so freely of yourself, and will live in her sphere of radiance. Love will come to you. Meditate also on the plants whose essences you are enjoying. Envision the rose, the sprig of lavender, the sandalwood tree who gave her heart for you. Sip rose hip and licorice tea (use a tea bag of each in a cup of hot water. It’s sweet and rosy) or a raspberry/champagne smoothie (1/2 cup raspberries, 3 ice cubes, a splash of orange juice, 1/2 to one cup champagne; mix together in blender till smooth).
